KBYU-FM 89.1 FM Classical 89 is a classical music radio station run by Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. KBYU-FM has a nickname Classical 89. KBYU-FM began broadcasting at Brigham Young University as an AM station in the 1940s. Originally named KBRG, it was the first collegiate radio station west of the Mississippi.
The station became KBYU and also the FM station in 1960.
In 1978 the station changed to an all-classical music format, which it carries today. In 1987, the 20-hour broadcast day went to a full 24 hours a day. Now KBYU broadcasts 24 hours a day. KBYU-FM is a nonprofit, public support station, which broadcasts at a frequency of 89.1 FM in Salt Lake County, at 89.5 FM in Utah County, and online at www.classical89.org.
Classical 89 broadcasts the finest in classical music. KBYU provides comprehensive classical music programming, combining original productions, distinctive specialty programs, live concert presentations and the talents of local and nationally-recognized hosts. KBYU-FM broadcasts presentations of Utah Symphony concerts and other locally-produced music productions, and to provide access to national programming.
In 2006, KBYU began broadcasting an ‘HD Radio’ signal along with its main signal, service on its HD2 signal.
