WFYI 90.1FM is based in Indianapolis, Indiana. WFYI is operated by Metropolitan Indianapolis Public Broadcasting. It began broadcasting in 1954 as WIAN, operated by the Indianapolis Public Schools. After years of operating like this, WFYI decided to transmit a lot of classical music, it acquired the classical music library of WAIV, Indianapolis’ classical music station. Because of this in 1971 WFYI become a charter member of National Public Radio (NPR). In 1988 this station became WFYI. WFYI programming is also carried on 89.5 FM WFCI, Franklin a service of Franklin College and 91.3 FM WNDY, Crawfordsville a service of Wabash College.
