WBHM 90.3 FM is licensed to Birmingham, Alabama, USA. WBHM serves the Birmingham area and through repeater WSGN also serves the Gadsden area. WBHM began broadcasting in 1976. WBHM became Birmingham’s first full-time classical station since the demise of a commercial FM outlet. The station is licensed to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where it maintains its studios. WBHM is a National Public Radio affiliate. It also primarily features classical music programming and news. WBHM won two RTNDA Murrow awards for Region 9 (Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas). NPR’s World of Opera is hosted Lisa Simeone, it features compelling performances from top American and international opera companies. World of Opera is every Wednesday night at 7 p.m., World of Opera broadcasts the seminal operas of the 17th century; the “bel canto” masterpieces of Gaetano Donizetti and Vincenzo Bellini; the revolutionary 19th-century works of Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner; and, of course, operas in the “true-to-life” verismo style of Puccini and Mascagni.
